Quarantine Blues
03:03
|
|||
I don’t feel bad or sad that I don’t have a lot and
I’m grateful……. For what little I’ve got and
I try to forgive what can’t be forgotten
And I try to forget what can’t be forgiven
Outside my window I see a squirrel on the feeder
He sees me seeing him, but he doesn’t retreat, or
Even slow down his attempts to try and defeat
All the squirrel-proofin’ tricks I’ve tried, to teach him hard livin’
But it’s quieter 'round here than it usually is
There’s no cars speedin’ by, and there’s no screamin’ kids
From miles around I can hear all of the birds
Singing new songs that I have never heard
They gather and they scatter, they don’t care what it means
They soar and they fly and they float on the breeze
It’s all very peaceful, it’s a pastoral scene
While we are locked here in quarantine
That squirrel has snuck his way over, and then back under
His pea-sized brain I think must be the eighth wonder
My sunflower seeds he will rob and he will plunder
He’s proof that necessity’s the mother of invention
Lexi and Luci just stare mildly amused
They are inside cats, don’t have to hunt for their food
They never have to worry if their bowls will be renewed
While I feel increasing levels of apprehension
But it’s quieter round here than it usually is
There’s no cars speedin’ by, and there’s no screamin’ kids
From miles around I can hear all of the birds
Singing new songs that I have never heard
They gather and they scatter they don’t care what it means
They soar and they fly and they float on the breeze
It’s all very peaceful, it’s a pastoral scene
While we are locked here in quarantine
I don’t feel bad or sad that I don’t have a lot and
I’m grateful……. for what little I’ve got and
I try to forgive what can’t be forgotten
And I try to forget what can’t be forgiven

Butterfly,
Fluttering,
White, with a few crimson spots on its wings
Landed on her shoulder, fell asleep with no fear
She said, “I’m sure you’ve never seen this kind of butterfly here”
“It nourishes itself on only one type of flower
That only grows in the mountains of Okinawa
To cultivate them here is lots of trouble and expense
But now this little creature thinks of me as a friend”
“Open your eyes there’s the moon
Yes there are two moons you see them too
We were forced thru hard times and we made it
Now there’s something the two of us must do”
“If you become part of nature and stay very still
And convince yourself you’re a tree or grass on the hill
It takes time but once the butterfly lets down its guard
You can become friends it’s not very hard
And when the time comes they just quietly disappear
It’s as if they’ve just been absorbed by the air
I never find their bodies but I’m aware they have died
They don’t leave any trace behind”
“We faced all kinds of complications
Things that defied explanations
I wanted to stay here forever and forget all about time
But I know where there’s an exit, if I’m not mistaken”
“They come out of nowhere and hardly exist,
Then,
Search for a few limited things and return to nothingness again
They come out of nowhere and hardly exist,
Then,
Search for a few limited things and return to nothingness"

New Year's Day
04:00
|
|||
Yesterday was New Year's Eve,
I walked through the crowd with a flower
I wanted so badly to believe we would meet at our appointed hour
I scanned the faces all around
Everybody was having fun
But alas! My love could not be found as we counted down to one
10, 9, 8, I just couldn't wait
7, 6, 5, I was glad to be alive
4, 3, 2, all I thought about was you
But when they counted down to 1, we're all done
10, 9, 8, I just couldn't wait
7, 6, 5, I was glad to be alive
4, 3, 2, all I thought about was you
But then they counted down to 1, now we're all done
There she stood in a state of bliss
A look of joy upon her face
As she was leaning in for her first kiss my broken heart was launched into space
The night went black as she kissed his lips
The stars were bright but so far away
As the countdown echoed in my rocket ship
Now I float through space on New Year's Day
10, 9, 8, I just couldn't wait
7, 6, 5, I was glad to be alive
4, 3, 2, all I thought about was you
But when they counted down to 1, we're all done
10, 9, 8, I just couldn't wait
7, 6, 5, I was glad to be alive
4, 3, 2, all I thought about was you
But then they counted down to 1, we're all done

Into The Light
03:37
|
|||
She left you on a sunny June afternoon
Took the kids, cleared all the toys out of their room
All the photos were gone too, except for the ones with you
From a time just yesterday that’s gone too soon
Pushing swings, climbing mountains, and goofy grins
Loving kisses, throwing caution to the wind
Once together, now alone, tender hearts have turned to stone
How suddenly what’s gone that might have been
Some turn to the bottle, some turn to the Bible
When survival gets mean, it’s a means of survival
Like seeds underground, you need faith to get by
Roots live in the dark but still reach for the sky
And they make it … into the light
Half the dishes and silverware, the board games your family played
The only things left in full were those bills that were left unpaid
Angry words were spoken, tender hearts were broken
It’s too late for sorrow but too early for those memories to fade
Now she’s told half the story to friends and some of it’s true
But she left out all of the parts that were important to you
Now those friends all chose their sides, they believe all the lies
There’s no point in explaining, those friendships are already through
We’ve all been there before my friend
I won’t deny that it’s worse but this isn’t the end
I know you’re not guilty I know you’re not wrong
I know that it’s hard but I know that you're strong
And you’ll make it back… into the light
Some turn to the bottle, some turn to the Bible
When survival gets mean, it’s a means of survival
Like seeds underground, you need faith to get by
Roots can't see the sun but still reach for the sky
And they make it … into the light
Into The Light

Every Love
02:17
|
|||
Rainbows bright and clear in a waterfall mist
Fairy angel smile, leprechaun kiss
Close enough to reach in, but never to touch
Natural goddess, delicate crush
Every love, every love, every love, every love
Breeze in a corner, wind in a field
A sparrow in flight, the turn of a wheel
Cool stream of water filling my cup
So fully present, yet never enough
Every love, every love, every love, every love
Baking sun, cleansing rain, peaceful snow
Wisdom, understanding and wonder
Trust and forgiveness, black feather of crow
Dancer to rhythms of thunder
Every love, every love, every love, every love

Jesus came cruising up highway 61
On his gold and black Harley-Davidson
With two flags whippin' over twin tailpipes
The POW-MIA and the Stars and Stripes
He had a lit cigar clenched in between his teeth
As he passed me by he sipped a beer and winked at me
Yeah it's alcohol, tobacco, and firearms
He said it sounds like a party to me
Alcohol, tobacco and firearms
Ain't that the way Jesus wanted it to be?
With an iron cross sticker on his license tag
And a 30-06 strapped to his saddle bag
We've got 35 bottles set up on the back fence
One for every hundred dollars that he owes in back rents
From 60 yards we've already hit 34
After one more bottle we'll drink 35 more
'Cause it's alcohol, tobacco, and firearms
He said it sounds like a party to me (who brought the chips?)
Alcohol, tobacco and firearms
Ain't that the way Jesus wanted it to be?

What's Ours
03:01
|

WHAT’S OURS (lyrics by Sarah Napolitan)
I have traveled far and wide
To ebb and flow just like the tide
To tumble like a laughing shell
In crashing waves I know so well
And you have flown just like a bird
To fly without a single word
Shining in the face of time
The clouds an ancient lullaby
Bird and sky and sea and rain
And we will meet our friends again
Though they may wear a different face
And dance with us in a different place
Lake and snow and fire and stars
We do not lose what’s always ours
The dances of a thousand nights
The ocean in the firelight
To see you there beside the sea
In pouring rain laughing with me
Entire towns sing to the birds
With lyrics full of unknown words
And all the places grow and change
and your heart lives in many names
Bird and sky and sea and rain
And we will meet our friends again
Though they may wear a different face
And dance with us in a different place
Lake and snow and fire and stars
We do not lose what’s always ours
